These royals once participated in the Olympic Games

It is known that many members of the royal family love to show off their athletic side. But did you know that some members of the royal family were real stars in the sports they played, and even competed in the Olympic Games? We list those sports fans!

Prince Albert of Monaco

Prince Albert of Monaco competed as a bobsledder in the Winter Olympics no less than five times, in 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002. He competed in two-man and four-man bobsleigh, and during three editions he was also the flag bearer for Monaco. Unfortunately, the prince did not collect any medals, his best result being 25th place during the 1988 Calgary Games.

Princess Anne of the United Kingdom

In 1976, during the Summer Olympics in Montreal, Princess Anne of the United Kingdom was the first British princess to compete in the Olympic Games. She competed in the all-around equestrian event on a horse owned by her mother, Queen Elizabeth, called Goodwill. In the photo below, which the British court shared a few years ago, you can see Anne training with her horse before participating in the Olympic Games.

King Felipe of Spain

In 1992, Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe placed sixth at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He was part of the Spanish Olympic sailing team.

Crown Prince Felipe is the flag bearer for the Spanish national team during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

Princess Charlene of Monaco

Before Charlene Wittstock started dating Prince Albert of Monaco, she was a professional swimmer. In 2000, she participated in the Summer Olympics in Sydney, where she placed fifth with the South African national team in the 4×100 meters medley race.

King Harald of Norway

King Harald of Norway as a sailor participated in the Summer Olympics three times, in 1964, 1968 and 1972. Although the Norwegian king has won medals at the World Championships, an Olympic medal is not part of his collection.

Zara Tindall

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree for Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall. She is also active in equestrian sports and in 2012 she participated in the Summer Olympics in London. Her horse High Kingdom won the silver medal presented to her by her mother, Princess Anne. It’s good to know that her father and Princess Anne’s first husband, Mark Phillips, also once competed in an equestrian event at the Olympic Games.
