Microsoft is also turning Copilot into a standalone app on Windows 10. Users don’t have to choose whether they want it.
Microsoft announced at the end of May that it would be turning Windows Copilot into a standalone app that would appear on the Start screen and taskbar. This should result in a better user experience than earlier versions of the AI assistant. Microsoft has been steadily rolling out updated Copilot to Windows users, and now it’s Windows 10’s turn as well, as you’ll notice. Tom’s Devices on me.
Mandatory update
Copilot experience on Windows 10 is An offer you can’t refuse.Literally. The update is part of the mandatory Windows Update, though it’s not yet clear exactly when the update will roll out. This makes it nearly impossible to escape Windows Copilot, otherwise you’ll have to permanently remove your computer from the internet.
Windows Copilot arrived in Windows 10 on November 30, but the rollout hasn’t been entirely smooth. The AI feature can act stubbornly when it’s not positioned in its preferred location on the screen. These issues shouldn’t occur with the updated Copilot app.
Forced love
The fact that Copilot is coming to Windows 10 in the first place is a surprise in itself, considering that support is set to end soon in October 2025. It’s been a harsh reality check for Microsoft, which is struggling to get Windows 10 users onto Windows 11.
In any case, the hardware requirements are no reason not to run Copilot on Windows 10. You don’t need more than 4GB of RAM and a 720p display: most Windows 10 PCs meet these requirements more than that. Ignoring these many millions of potential users wouldn’t be a smart move. So Microsoft has had to embrace Windows 10 once again, with some hesitation.
