Australia and Great Britain Announced plans To conclude a bilateral treaty with the United States for joint production of submarines under the AUKUS security agreement. This agreement aims to facilitate the joint construction of a new class of nuclear-powered submarines at Barrow-in-Furness, Great Britain and South Australia.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles confirmed that this treaty will govern important aspects of the AUKUS partnership, including industrial cooperation, technology transfer and operational coordination between the two countries’ submarine fleets. He stressed the common nature of the class of submarines used by both countries.

British Defense Secretary John Healey revealed that at a recent meeting in London, AUKUS defense ministers also agreed to integrate British Stingray torpedoes into P-8A maritime patrol aircraft deployed in the Indo-Pacific region for submarine hunting operations.

Strengthening capabilities and technologies

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized the significant progress made by AUKUS partners through joint experiments in land warfare, underwater domains, and electromagnetic spectrum activities. These efforts, classified under the “Second Pillar” of the AUKUS framework, aim to enhance comprehensive combat capabilities.

A joint statement from the partners revealed their commitment to enhancing the development and deployment of hypersonic offensive and defensive technologies. They also announced plans to conduct a large-scale drone exercise later this year.
