The German supermarket chain ALDI SÜD has taken a new step in the field of e-commerce. The retail company has started an experiment with grocery delivery. Thus, ALDI customers in the German Ruhr area can order fresh food products such as fruits, vegetables, bread, cheese or milk online for the first time.
ALDI SÜD has announced that customers in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Duisburg and Oberhausen can now register for the delivery service. A click-and-collect test is also planned for the future, whereby customers order goods online and pick them up from the store themselves.
Until now, the company had only offered non-food items such as vacuum cleaners and knife blocks in its German online store. Trials of food product delivery have already been carried out at foreign subsidiaries in the United States, United Kingdom and Switzerland.
The discount confirms that this is a local and limited experience and that there is currently no planning to implement the delivery service at the national level. According to the company, this is because online food sales in Germany are not currently a profitable business model due to high personnel and logistics costs.
ALDI formally consists of two independent companies, ALDI Nord with headquarters in Essen and ALDI SÜD with headquarters in Mülheim an der Ruhr. ALDI Nord operates in the Netherlands and Belgium. The two companies act jointly towards suppliers.
