KÍ Klaksvík’s team is still able to survive a major European tournament, but there is still a lot of disappointment on the faces of the players. This has to do with the result of the first match against Molde. The Swedes lost 2-1 at home, so the Champions League qualifiers were within reach.
However, sixteen minutes later, Molde opened the score for Norway through Christian Eriksen. However, neither team was able to score in the remaining playing time, so it was extra time to determine who would survive another round at the highest stage in football.
In this extension, Molde came out on top. In the 112th minute, 31-year-old Martin Lynes became the big hero for the Norwegian side. The defender pushed the ball behind Swedish goalkeeper Jonathan Johansson with a dry shot. Thus ended KÍ Klaksvík’s Champions League fairy tale.
Europa League chances
However, due to the defeat, KÍ Klaksvík will enter the Europa League qualifiers. The small country team will meet the winner of the match between FC Sheriff Tiraspol and FC BATE Borisov. KÍ Klaksvík could easily become an opponent for Ajax or PSV Eindhoven in the group stage of the tournament this year.
If a club from Moldova or Belarus proves to be too big, KÍ Klaksvík will still have a ticket to the UEFA Conference League. So the first thing is certain: no Faroese club has ever played in a major European tournament.
