In the UK, exotic plants such as figs and avocados are flourishing due to very hot weather this summer. BBC News writes. Houseplants now grow well outdoors, while traditional British varieties grow less well. According to experts, water scarcity will cause problems in the future.

It’s already hot and dry this summer, including England, and even up north they’re feeling it. In the subtropical gardens of Harlow Carr, in Harrogate, north of Leeds, bananas, dahlias and some varieties of ginger survive the winter.

According to the British National Weather Service, those high temperatures in the north are due to climate change. But experts also warn that hot, dry summers like this year could negatively affect crops. All plants need water to grow and sustain themselves.

“For starters, warmer summers are welcome in the UK and are a great opportunity to grow new exotic plants,” said Chris Atkinson, a botanist at the University of Greenwich. “But a lack of water can lead to less effective growth of any plant.” (svo)
