British Home Secretary Priti Patel resigned shortly before the appointment of the new prime minister, Liz Truss. “It has been the honor of my life to serve our country as Home Secretary for the past three years,” Patel wrote Monday evening in her resignation letter to outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson. On Tuesday, the new leader of Britain’s Conservative Party will replace Johnson as head of government.

Patel was one of the leading figures in the controversial Johnson era. For example, the deal was made with the Rwandan government to receive asylum seekers and refugees arriving in the UK in Rwanda. The ‘Rwanda Charter’ is currently under review by the London High Court for legality.
Patel was also responsible for reforming the police law, which critics say has severely restricted the right to demonstrate. Now the police can stop the protests due to, among other things, noise pollution.
It is by no means certain whether the Conservative government led by Liz Truss will take a somewhat more moderate path. The current Chief Justice Suila Braverman, whose views are at least right-wing conservatives, is a leading candidate for Home Secretary.
