Cheers all around: Woodcock elephant predicts early start to spring in US | strange

Large parts of the United States have experienced frigid temperatures in recent weeks. But if we can believe the woodchuck Phil, better weather is coming soon. On Groundhog Day, expect mild spring weather to be on the way. Phil’s predictions are viewed with suspicion every year in the United States.

Phil is the most famous groundhog in the United States. Every year on February 2nd, or Groundhog Day, he predicts how long winter will last.

Shade

In keeping with tradition, the rodent was removed from its trunk at dawn today in the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. If he then sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter weather are coming.

But the groundhog couldn’t see his shadow this time. In other words, we can assume a quick start to spring. Tens of thousands of spectators who were in attendance despite the freezing temperatures began cheering after this prediction.

“Human translation errors”

Phil has been predicting the weather since 1887. According to the Groundhog Club, the woodchuck always gets it right. The incorrect predictions are due to human “translation errors.” In fact, less than half of the predictions are correct. Thus tossing a coin gives a more reliable result.

The American tradition of Groundhog Day was also the inspiration for the 1993 film of the same name, starring Bill Murray. Since then, Groundhog Day has also received media attention in Europe.
