Coronavirus cases fall again in Ostend

After several weeks of rising numbers, the number of coronavirus infections has fallen by more than 30% in the past week.

Several residents of residential care centers were tested as a precaution, but no additional infections were found anywhere except for one WZC. Nearly 3 out of 4 Ostend residents have now been fully vaccinated. 81 cases of Covid-19 were detected last week in Ostend, down more than 30% compared to last week. Relatively, this is 113.1 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. The majority of infections are still found among young people: 37% of positive cases were found in Ostend residents under 19 years of age. This week, 10 infections (or 12.3%) also occurred in people over 65 years of age.

After infections at five different residential care centers last week, plenty of additional testing has been done on residents and staff. Fortunately, this did not reveal any new infections in most residential care centers. At one facility, five additional infections were identified among residents and seven among staff members. Fortunately, the outbreak was limited to one department.

460 tests were performed at the testing center, 66 of them with positive results (14.3%). There are currently 5 patients with coronavirus in Ostend hospitals: 4 in AZ Damiaan and 1 at Serruys campus in AZ Sint-Jan.

90.6% of the population of Ostend received at least one shot, 86.6% received full vaccinations. 74.1% of the population was fully vaccinated. A total of 126,427 rounds were taken at the vaccination center in Kursaal.
