Eighty immigrants arrive in Spain with swimming | abroad

More than eighty immigrants arrived in the Spanish coastal city of Ceuta from Morocco by swimming. The immigrants were arrested when they entered Spanish territory. Spanish authorities are reporting this.

The migrants, including several minors, had left at night from the beaches of Fnideq, a Moroccan town a few kilometers south of Ceuta. At least two families have also managed to put their feet on the ground in inflatable boats.

The Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla are the only land borders of the European Union with Africa. Regular attempts to enter European territory are being made in both regions.

Dangerous crossing

Around 246 people are said to have reached Ceuta and Melilla by April of this year. This is 80 percent less than it was in 2020. About 1 in 100 people who risk crossing will drown. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a total of 400 people have already died during the dangerous journey since the start of last year.

In total, some 6,676 migrants were said to have arrived in Spain along the coast this year. At the end of April, about 100 migrants from Morocco swam to Ceuta. Most of them were sent back to Morocco.
