As part of Pride Month, SCHUNCK is showing Pride on June 15th: a true story about a London LGSM (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners) during the British miners’ strike. There is a discussion of the film with Queer Barkstad and alderman Peter van Zutphen, as an eyewitness to the miners’ strikes in the United Kingdom.
Pride is a feel-good, uplifting comedy set in 1980s Britain at the time of the miners’ strikes. Although it was a bleak time, the movie is anything but. The film, directed by multi-Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus, is based on a true story. It shows the convergence of two subcultures. The homosexuals of London on the one hand and the Welsh miners on the other, who at first sight have nothing to do with each other, or want to have, but who seem to share a common purpose. The clash between the different groups creates a lot of hilarious moments. Leading British actors such as Bill Negley, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West participate in this film. Music from artists like Boy George and Shirley & Company complement the proud ’80s feel.
