Five people have been trapped in a cave in southwestern Slovenia since Saturday afternoon. Local media reported on Sunday that heavy rain caused water levels to rise, preventing rescuers from safely getting them out.
The group, which includes a family of three and two tour guides, is said to have been housed in a safe location in the 8.2-kilometre Krzna Jama cave, which can only be visited by boat.
On Saturday evening, rescuers were able to reach the group briefly and deliver food, water and a warm tent. Civil protection officials in the area told reporters.
But because the group was more than two kilometers from the cave entrance, it would take a new team of divers three to four hours to reach them, officials said, adding that the final rescue would depend on when the water level rose. STA news agency reported.
It could be Sunday night, but it could also be a few days.
Krzyna Jama, a network of underground lakes with emerald green water, is the fourth largest known cave ecosystem in the world in terms of biodiversity.
