Good news for Lidl-Trek: Elisa Longo Borghini is back on the bike

There’s a good chance we’ll see Elisa Longo Borghini in action this season. The Italian Lidl-Trek champion decided to take a break due to a hip injury, but now she’s back on the bike.

Longo Borghini developed an infection in her thigh after retiring from the Tour de France, forcing her to start a course of antibiotics. So taking part in the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow was not an option. Al-Faris, 31, suffered from a deep skin infection in the upper part of her left thigh, which caused pain and a fever. Then Liddell Trek slammed the brakes: The American team didn’t want to risk their health.

This was not the first setback that Longo Borghini has had to deal with this season. “Mentally speaking, it’s a solid blow, which unfortunately comes in an already difficult season. The fact that I had to leave the Tour was a huge disappointment. (…) Withdrawal at this point in the season was the last thing I wanted, but the priority should be my health “I focus on recovery and healing,” she said at the beginning of this month.

We are now three weeks away and the world looks very different for Luongo Borghini, who is now training again. It’s still not clear when she can pin a back number again. Lidl-Trek will monitor the situation closely and draw up the remaining competition programme.
