Google Will Soon Help You Spot AI Images

You’ll soon be able to tell if an image was created by AI or not. Google uses C2PA authentication for this.

Google plants To release technology that can tell whether a photo was taken with a camera, edited with software, or created by artificial intelligence. The technology is being rolled out in the form of an “About this photo” feature that will appear in search results. Google is using a system that is part of Alliance for Content Source and Authenticity (C2PA). The tool will appear in Google Search and Google Ads in the coming months, though better interoperability with third parties is needed to realize its full potential.

C2PA Standard

Google is part of Alliance for Content Source and Authenticity (C2PA). C2PA sets the technical standards for the provenance of digital content, along with other major technology companies. In addition to Google, Amazon, OpenAI, Intel, Microsoft, and Adobe also support C2PA authentication. Google helped develop the latest C2PA technical standards (version 2.1).

If an image contains C2PA metadata, people can use the “About this image” feature to see if it was created using AI tools. This gives users more context about the image. Google will be bringing this newer version of content credentials to Google Search and Google Ads in the coming months. The tool will be available in Google Images, Lens, and Circle to Search.

Interoperability

Google may have adopted the C2PA authentication standard, but it only has a real chance of success if there is widespread cooperation. Only a handful of cameras support the open technical standard C2PA, which adds metadata to the image. When interoperability with all hardware and software is perfect, the mechanism has a real chance of success.
