A lava flow from the volcano on the Canary island of La Palma destroyed 269 buildings on Saturday. This brings the total number of destroyed buildings to 1,817, according to Spanish public radio RTVE.

No new evacuations have been announced. Nearly 40 light to moderate earthquakes have been recorded again since midnight. The heaviest was 4.6 at a depth of 37 kilometers. “The earthquakes indicate that the outbreak is continuing unabated,” said expert Eduardo Suarez of the National Geographic Institute.

The volcano located in Cumbre Vieja does not have an official name yet. The volcano erupted on September 19 for the first time in 50 years. Since then, rains of lava and ash have wreaked havoc on homes, infrastructure and agriculture. More than 7,000 people had to leave their homes as a precaution. Nobody was seriously injured.
According to the operator Aina, the airport on the island was operating, but it did not have to handle air traffic due to the high level of ash in the air. Air traffic to the other major tourist islands – Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote – is normal.
