The trial over Britain’s Prince Harry’s security began on Tuesday in London. According to the prince’s lawyer, his client was “subjected to unfair treatment” by the agency responsible for the security of the royal family.
Police protection for Prince Harry in the UK ended when the prince moved to the US. As a result, Harry is said to have received “unlawful and unfair treatment”.
Shahid Fatima, the prince’s lawyer, said, according to what was reported by the Daily Mail newspaper, “This case is about a person’s right to security. There is no right more important than this.” Reuters Against the judge.
The lawyer representing the British government said that Harry received treatment “tailored to him.” According to the lawyer, the prince is sometimes added to the group of people receiving police protection.
The lawyer further stated that the Prince’s position will be taken into consideration when he comes to England. But he said that did not mean Harry “should be treated in the same way as if he had lived in the UK all the time”.
Prince Harry has not had police protection since 2020
RAVEC, which handles security for the royal family, decided in 2020 that King Charles’ youngest son would no longer automatically receive police protection when he came to the UK.
RAVEC made this decision after the Prince and his wife, Meghan, stepped down as working members of the British Royal Family and moved to the United States. Last year, Harry was given permission to appeal this decision.
Harry suggested he pay for police security himself. But the British Foreign Office does not want to share the information it obtains from intelligence services with other security services. Therefore, the prince decided to take legal measures, because he did not feel safe without security.
During Tuesday’s hearing, only the lawyers’ opening statements were made public. The rest of the case will take place behind closed doors in the coming days. Harry was not present on the first day itself.
