look. Storm Juliet covers Spanish holiday paradise Mallorca under thick snow: ‘not seen in twelve years’ | outside

Large parts of Spain woke up today under a thick layer of snow. The country is currently experiencing a blizzard “Juliet”. Winter weather brings with it some unique images. No sun, no sea, no beach, but thick flakes of snow and freezing cold. Especially for the island of Mallorca, which is a real paradise for summer vacationers, snowfall on the coast is an extremely rare phenomenon. “This is something we haven’t seen in Mallorca for twelve years,” it seems.

Storm Juliet has been sweeping Spain for days. A cold snap from the north of the country has now hit the mainland, though the ice there is melting at a rapid pace. The eastern Balearic archipelago currently has a snowfall code orange, as well as the regions of Castile-León, Castile-La Mancha, Aragon, and Catalonia.

In the Cantabria region, snow cover is expected to be 6 cm and temperatures around -6 degrees. In Catalonia, the mercury will drop to -10 degrees. In many areas, the roads are very slippery. The Spanish Meteorological Institute AEMET therefore calls for caution.

Snow is also expected in large parts of the western region of Extremadura, which borders Portugal. It is also possible to shower in winter in the capital Madrid and the mercury drops to -10°C.

“amazing”

The sunny holiday paradise of Mallorca is now pristine white. Residents enjoy it to the fullest. For the population, it is a very rare phenomenon that we have not seen in twelve years: “We did not expect this at all. We came here to spend the day and it’s really incredible.”

A temperature of -19 degrees was recorded on the highest peaks of the Pyrenees, the Spanish newspaper El Pais writes. In the most densely populated areas of the mountain range, the temperature today is -7 degrees Celsius.

Freezing temperatures and snowfall are expected to continue in the country throughout the week, according to AEMET.
