Luke Humphries: World darts champion with a mental health mission

World Darts Champion Luke Humphreys advocates for mental health during the Liverpool Premier League Darts Championship, taking place at the M&S Bank Arena on Thursday 25 April. Humphries tops the rankings and with recent victories in cities such as Brighton, Nottingham and Dublin, he is one of the most prominent players in the world of darts. His openness about mental health issues has attracted a lot of attention.

Humphreys has teamed up with the charity Chasing the Stigma, which aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health. The organization provides access to the largest and most comprehensive directory of mental health services in the UK through its Hope Centre. In doing so, they emphasize the importance of discussing and treating mental health problems.

“Everyone has their own struggles, but it's important to be open about this and ask for support when needed,” Humphreys said. “It's time we take mental health as seriously as physical health.”

The Hub of Hope not only has information on where to find help, but also provides direct contact options with emergency services such as Samaritans or via the ShoutCrisis text line in England, which is available 24/7.

M&S Bank Arena and ACC Liverpool Group, operators of the venue, have adopted the Hope Center as an official mental health resource for their employees, and are encouraging other businesses to follow suit. Ben Williams, Director of M&S Bank Arena, stresses the importance of this initiative: “It is important that we continue the conversation around mental health and take action to eliminate stigma.”
