New study shows: Alcohol increases risk of multiple cancers, coffee helps fight liver cancer | Sciences

Alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cancers more than previously thought. This is the conclusion of an international study led by Imperial College London. On the other hand, coffee is said to protect against liver cancer.

It was already known that alcohol can lead to breast and liver cancer. There is now an increased risk of head, neck, esophageal, and colon cancer, among others. This is because alcohol breaks down during metabolism into chemicals that can bind to DNA and eventually lead to mutations.

In addition, alcohol also interferes with hormone levels. It increases the value of certain hormones associated with the development of breast cancer. The researchers concluded that the higher the alcohol consumption, the greater the chance of developing associated cancers.

Coffee consumption may help prevent liver cancer. Coffee possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which protect against diseases caused by inflammation, such as cancer. The team discovered that eating dairy products and whole grains also reduced the risk of colon cancer.

“This study confirms the evidence we have on alcohol and coffee in relation to cancer,” said Jyota Mitro, director of research and innovation at the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), which funded the research. “More research should provide insight into the link between alcohol, coffee, and cancer.”

Researchers call for greater public awareness of the links between alcohol use and cancer, and to encourage consumption to be limited.
