A woman died in southwestern Japan as a result of torrential rain. Local authorities said today that three people are also missing.

The 77-year-old woman died after her home in rural Fukuoka Prefecture was hit by a landslide. Her husband, who was conscious when local firefighters found him, was taken to hospital.

Another landslide left three people missing in Karatsu town, Saga Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of the possibility of more floods and landslides in the Fukuoka and Oita regions. Residents have been advised to leave the area, but no binding evacuation orders have been issued.

“This is the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the region,” said Satoshi Sugimoto of the Meteorological Administration. “This situation puts lives at risk.”

Japan gets heavy rains every June and July, but scientists say the risk of severe weather has increased due to climate change.
