Overwatch 2 will replace the original upon Early Access launch

Overwatch 2 will be available through Early Access from October 4, which also appears to mark the end of the original.

in AMA on Reddit Some developers answered fan questions and some interesting things came out. The team assures that once the sequel is released via Early Access, it will immediately replace the original.

What does “early access” mean for Overwatch 2? Does this mean that on this day OW1 will be replaced by OW2’s PvP or will OW1 be discontinued once the game is out of Early Access?

We use the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the beginning of many new things coming into the game. We’re launching with new heroes, maps and features, but more are coming every season – every 9 weeks. We recently released a roadmap detailing some of this content, with a new hero in Seasons 1 and 2 and a new map in Season 2. In addition, larger portions of the game that have always been a part of OW2’s vision will be released for the game as part of the live service, Including the launch of a PvE campaign next year.

When OW2 launches on October 4, it will be a replacement for the current live service.

So Overwatch 2 will actually appear as an update to the first part, rather than having to download the entire game. However, it is worth noting that the story part of the game will not appear until 2023, as this should be one of the main changes in the game. But it might be worth the extra wait.
