Miguel Mauri Buendia is of Andalusian descent, but was born in Madrid in 1955. He studied art history and music before attending the Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Madrid. He was ordained a priest in 1980. After his military service he became a student Pontifical Ecclesiastical AcademyThe Vatican Training Institute for Diplomats, where he graduated in 1987 to enter the Holy See’s diplomatic service.

The young diplomat gained experience as a secretary in nunciatures in Rwanda, Uganda, Morocco and Nicaragua, and later as a counselor in Egypt, Slovenia and Ireland.
