The 96-year-old queen has been staying at Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands since late July. British media reports that the planned ceremony at the grand estate in Aberdeenshire will be replaced by a smaller-scale private event.

Elizabeth, who has been suffering from ill health for the past few months, also missed the start of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last month. She also previously missed several ceremonies marking her 70th anniversary as Queen of the United Kingdom. The country celebrated its platinum anniversary with four days of parades, street parties and other events across Britain and the Commonwealth.

A royal source told British newspaper The Mirror that it was disappointing that the ceremony could not go ahead as planned. Other sources suggest that the queen’s movement was reduced to altered plans. Buckingham Palace is attempting to confirm rumors of the Queen’s ill health, insisting a private event will bring “great comfort” to the Queen’s schedule.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is the second longest-reigning monarch in history. Louis XIV, the ‘Sun King’ of France, reigned from 1643 to 1715, making him 72 years and 110 days on the throne. The Queen can match that record on May 25, 2024.
