Travelers to Italy threaten to face strikes next week. Trade unions have announced measures on the railways that are likely to stop a large part of train traffic, Italian media reported. Two days later, the airport staff went on strike. The strikes come in the middle of the peak tourism season, when many vacationers visit the southern European country.
The rail strikes affect both Trenitalia, which is owned by Italian Railways, and private high-speed train operator Italo. Employees across the country will be on strike at 3am on Thursday and resume at 2am on Friday. Trenitalia warns that trains may be partially or completely idle.
According to the six unions organizing the strike, there is an escalating conflict in Trenitalia over schedules and workload, Italian news agency ADN Kronos reports. Italo employees are unhappy with their employer’s wage offer.

After two days of railway strike, it is the turn of the airport staff in Italy. Staff responsible for check-in and baggage handling, for example, will be off work from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., US news agency ANSA reported. The employees are demanding a new collective agreement, because the old one expired six years ago.
The strike of the ground crew coincides with the strike of the pilots and cabin crew of the airline Vueling. They complain that the budget bulletin does not want to talk to the unions. There is also a strike at Air Malta in Italy, which operates flights for Ryanair.
