Karl Nehammer (49) was sworn in as Austria’s new chancellor on Monday. He succeeds Alexander Schallenberg, who held the position for a month and a half after the resignation of Sebastian Kurz. The new education minister was immediately criticized for not setting an example for young people.

Martin Polachek, Rector of the University of Graz, will be the new Minister of Education and Science. It has been the subject of much discussion in the media in recent days. This is not to say that there is any doubt about his abilities, it is his appearance that many Austrians suffer from. For them, the minister is still in a tight-fitting suit. Shave and trim neatly too. And let that be exactly what Polashik is not.

The professor is the first Austrian minister to have long hair since 2007. Not many conservative Austrians think this is a role model for young people.

Polachik himself did not respond to the discussion, but said he hoped he would be judged based on his policies, not his appearance.

Just a few months ago, the new health minister’s sneakers were the main topic. Opinion polls have been organized in the Austrian media about whether Wolfgang Mukstein’s shoes are suitable or not. In the end the wind quickly died down.
