Asus is known for the compact and high-end smartphones launched by the company. However, with the all-new Zenfone 11 Ultra, the manufacturer is taking a completely different tack. Anyone who wants a powerful, compact phone — like the Zenfone 10 and Zenfone 9 — will be disappointed with the new Zenfone 11 Ultra. The device has a large 6.78-inch display and looks very similar to the ROG Phone 8.

Asus won't be releasing a compact Zenfone 11 at the moment, but will continue to sell the Zenfone 10 as a compact alternative. This device has been available for eight months and still has good specifications. Since the Zenfone 11 Ultra is much larger, there's more room for the battery and other components.

The smartphone will soon be available in Benelux countries 999 euros. For this amount you get 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. However, during the promotional period, which lasts until April 14, Asus is pre-selling the Zenfone 11 Ultra 899 euros. In addition, a more powerful version with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage will be released. 1099 euros. You can choose from four colors: blue, grey, black and rose gold.

High-end specs in a larger package

The Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. This is the fastest mobile chip at the moment, so Asus has included a large amount of working memory and storage. The smartphone has been certified IP68 to protect it from water and dust. There are also stereo speakers and a headphone jack.

The screen (2400 x 1080 pixels), as we mentioned, is 6.78 inches. The bezels around the screen have become thinner and Asus has increased the brightness. The Zenfone 11 Ultra achieves a peak brightness of 2,500 nits, although only 5 percent of the screen gets that bright. Outdoors, in direct sunlight, the screen reaches 1,600 nits so you can read everything clearly. The refresh rate is 120Hz, but it is increased to 144Hz when playing games.

The battery capacity is 5,500 mAh, which is larger than most Android phones. According to Asus, the Zenfone 11 Ultra lasts much longer than its predecessors. It charges at a maximum of 65W, so you can fill the phone completely in 40 minutes. Wireless charging is possible at 15W. It is important to know that there is no charger in the box.

Cameras and AI features

There are three cameras on the back of the Zenfone 11 Ultra. First of all, it is a 50-megapixel main camera with a built-in camera deviation, which corrects motion blur. The camera allows you to zoom in at 2x “lossless”, meaning you can zoom in on the image by 2x without losing quality. Then the middle part of the sensor is used.

There's also a separate telephoto lens for greater zoom. It can zoom optically up to 3x (without loss of quality) and digitally up to 30x. It's not a periscope zoom lens, as is the case with the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. A 13-megapixel wide-angle lens lets you take 'miniature' photos and there's a 32-megapixel front camera for selfies.

With the Zenfone 11 Ultra, Asus is introducing a number of features that use artificial intelligence. For example, there is AI Transcript to convert spoken audio into text, but this doesn't work in Dutch. You can also create AI wallpapers. There is also a feature that filters out ambient noise while calling. This also works if you connect via WhatsApp.

Bad update policy

Unfortunately, Asus' update policy is quite disappointing. The Zenfone 11 Ultra runs Android 14 out of the box and gets two major version upgrades, to Android 15 and 16. Security patches are rolled out for four years. That's not much if you compare it to the best devices from Samsung and Google, for example, which offer seven years of support. OnePlus also does one better by promising four major Android updates.
