There are already nine candidates to succeed Johnson: They are also candidates for ex-ministers Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt.

Former Health Minister Sajid Javid and former Health Minister and Secretary of State Jeremy Hunt ran as candidates to succeed Boris Johnson. He wrote that to The Telegraph on Saturday evening.

In separate interviews with the newspaper, Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt pledged to cut corporate taxes. Javid resigned as minister Tuesday night, signaling the start of a slew of Conservative departures. He made it clear that he no longer trusted Prime Minister Johnson after a series of scandals involving the British government. In his Twitter message, he said it was clear that “the situation will not change under your leadership and I lost my confidence as a result.”

Including Javid and Hunt, nine Conservatives are already candidates for the new party chairperson and thus also the new prime minister of the United Kingdom. Secretary of State Liz Truss, Finance Minister Nadim Zahawi, Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, Representative Tom Tugendhat, Attorney General Suila Braverman and former Deputy Equal Opportunity Minister Kimi Badnoch have already advanced.

Johnson announced his resignation as party leader on Thursday. He will remain prime minister until there is someone to succeed him.
