Wassenaarders.nl | The Hague Arts Society: From Downton to Gatsby: Jewelery & Fashion 1890-1929

For the series and movie Downton Abbey, Andrew Prince was commissioned to design jewelry for the main characters. This inspired him to prepare a lecture (in English via ZOOM) about fashion and jewelry in this unique period.

Andrew said that jewelry and fashion are often seen as two completely separate and distinct areas of design, but that this is not true. Traditionally, the biggest fashion houses always work side by side with the best jewelers.

In his lecture, Andrew will take you through decades and special events between 1890 and 1929. During this period in particular, great designers worked with the best jewelers to produce matching jewelery and apparel of excellent quality and lustrous opulence.
Then Andrew takes us into the present. Based on clients and clients who ordered jewelry from him, he shows how they were dressed in their fancy outfit.

Andrew Prince has been passionate about jewelry since he was a little kid. Join renowned jewelry designer Elizabeth Gage and become an expert on The Antiques Roadshow. Later on, it independently designed for famous people like Michael Jackson (big crystal and pearl jewel) and Shirley Basie (necklaces).

In 2005, he created tiaras and jewelry for “Mrs Henderson Presents” starring Judi Dench, and in 2009 for Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria. In 2012, he was chosen by the creators of Downton Abbey to design jewelry for the third series. All of the female characters wore crowns, combs, earrings, and necklaces he designed and made.
