Why does Norway slaughter reindeer when crossing the border with Russia | outside

Reindeer causes a strange border conflict between Norway and Russia. Because they cross Russia’s borders so often, Russia is demanding compensation for “harboring” the animals and feeding them unwanted food. Oslo replies that she must now kill the reindeer returning from Russia.

Normally, the border fence is supposed to prevent reindeer from “traveling” back and forth between Norway and Russia. However, the fence appears to have suffered damage in several places. As a result, herds of reindeer, which normally graze on Norwegian soil, are now crossing the border into Russia. This year alone, dozens of animals are said to have migrated in search of new pastures.

Now that some of the reindeer have returned home, Russia is demanding financial compensation from Norway. And the Russians want compensation for the unwanted reindeer “harboring”.

According to the Russian authorities, Norway will have to pay around 4,500 euros for each reindeer that crosses the border. In addition, a lump sum is due for the number of days the reindeer have spent in the neighboring country. The total damage caused by animal locomotion behavior already runs into the millions. “It is strictly forbidden to cross the border into Russia, including for reindeer,” the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture said in a statement.

To prevent the reindeer from crossing the border again and causing economic damage, the “returnees” will be slaughtered in Norway. The Russian-Norwegian border is more than 150 kilometers long, seven kilometers of which are now being equipped with a reinforced “reindeer barrier”.

However, according to the Norwegian authorities, the construction of the new barrier is complicated because workers are only allowed to work on Norwegian soil. Crossing the border without a Russian visa is illegal. The construction cost is estimated at 322 thousand euros. The new barrier should be ready by October 1.
