Video resolution is important, but it’s not the only important part of a really great photo. HDR is just as important, and the Xbox Series X just got an HDR upgrade that is sure to make PS5 owners jealous.
YouTube has just activated HDR on all compatible Xbox consoles, including the new Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, as well as the Xbox One X and One S.
Although the PS4 has released the YouTube app that supports HDR since 2019, this feature was suspiciously absent on the PS5. Curiously, strong HDR support is one of the main reasons for choosing a next-generation controller.
The Xbox One X and One S have never supported HDR, although both devices have supported it since launch. Likewise, YouTube has supported HDR since 2016, so this update fixes a long-standing bug. Coincidentally, the next-generation S Series and X Series give Sony a small push.
If you want to know if your console is actually displaying HDR content, Engadget He indicates that you can do this by enabling the “Geek Statistics” panel. Simply move to the three dots button on the left side of the screen and then scroll to the end to activate this panel.
From there you can see that it is streaming in PQ Rec.2020 HDR format with the VP9-2 codec. This does not tell many people, there is a reason it is called geek stats, but it confirms that the app works in HDR.
There is not much HDR content on YouTube at the moment, despite the support provided on many popular devices, but you can still enjoy a little. Let’s hope the PS5 gets the update soon so everyone can enjoy it regardless of which console they purchased.
And don’t forget that retailers are getting more and more next-gen consoles, so check out our guides on where to buy the Xbox Series X and where to buy the PS5 to see what happens.
