This agreement is comparable to a series of security agreements that Ukraine previously concluded with other countries. The United States is the sixteenth country to conclude such an agreement. Previously, Germany, France, Spain and Belgium, among others, have done so.
Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, stressed yesterday that “lasting peace in Ukraine must be based on the ability to defend itself.” “By signing, we are also signaling to Russia our resolve against Vladimir Putin,” he added.
