An agreement within the G7 on a $50 billion loan to Ukraine, and Biden and Zelensky sign a security agreement

On the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Zelensky also signed a bilateral security agreement. Under this agreement, the United States is committed to continuing to support Ukraine militarily and financially over the next ten years. The agreement includes arms and financial support for Ukraine, but not the deployment of US forces.

This agreement is comparable to a series of security agreements that Ukraine previously concluded with other countries. The United States is the sixteenth country to conclude such an agreement. Previously, Germany, France, Spain and Belgium, among others, have done so.

Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, stressed yesterday that “lasting peace in Ukraine must be based on the ability to defend itself.” “By signing, we are also signaling to Russia our resolve against Vladimir Putin,” he added.

Ukraine is satisfied with the agreement. “We have come a long way in our cooperation with the United States, and the entire team has done an excellent job to make this future agreement possible,” said Andriy Jermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential administration.
