Anna-Maria Helsing is the new principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra

A warm bond with the orchestra

Over the past few years, the 51-year-old Helsing has developed a warm relationship with the British band as principal guest conductor. “I am delighted and very excited to deepen the partnership as the new Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra,” he said today. She is the orchestra’s first female principal conductor.

As the new Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra, Helsing follows in the footsteps of legendary pioneers Bramwell Dovey and Barry Wordsworth. Wordsworth will be an award-winning conductor in the orchestra. Hellsing will launch on October 1st this year. His contract runs until 2026.

Helsing’s next concert will be at Alexandra Palace in London on Monday 19 June. The program included works by Vivaldi, Max Richter and his Finnish compatriots Sibelius and Laurie Borra.

Since completing his studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Helsing has conducted all major Finnish and Swedish orchestras and gained experience conducting in many Scandinavian orchestras and opera houses. Outside of the Nordic countries he has conducted orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and the Musiquecollegium Winterthur. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Ruskin Chamber Music Festival in Jakobstad, Finland.
