BERLIN (AFP/DPA) – Storm Eunice has killed at least two people in Germany. A driver was killed when his car crashed into a tree in Altenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, on Friday evening. The 56-year-old driver was trapped and died on the spot of his injuries.
In nearby Sirpic, a car overturned at about the same time. The 33-year-old driver also died at the scene. According to a fire service spokesman, it is possible that the car left the road as a result of gusts of wind.
Earlier on Friday, Belgium and the UK had already reported several deaths from the storm. A 30-year-old woman was killed in London when a falling tree crashed into the car she was in. A man has died in Liverpool after being hit by flying debris. In western Belgium, a resident of a houseboat died when he ended up in the water due to high winds. There have also been a few deaths in the Netherlands.
In northern France, there were 130,000 homes without electricity. Eleven people were injured, three of them seriously. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin declared a state of emergency to facilitate aid access to affected areas.
