According to media reports, Myanmar’s new military leadership wants to indict former Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi on charges of high treason. Several observers on social media reported that the army decided this on Wednesday.

The Myanmar army took control of the country on Monday and declared a year-long state of emergency. Suu Kyi, the democratically elected leader, and scores of other politicians have been placed under house arrest.

On Tuesday, the military proposed a new government made up of generals, former high-ranking soldiers and politicians from a party backed by the army.

The United States and the European Union threaten to impose sanctions. The United Nations Security Council considered the military coup, but China blocked the condemnation, the BBC reported. Therefore, the United Nations Security Council did not reach a common position.

On Wednesday, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven countries expressed their deep concern after the coup. In a joint statement, British, American, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Canadian ministers called on the military to end the state of emergency, restore the democratically elected government, release all unjustly imprisoned people, human rights and respect the rule of law.
