America’s most popular Barbie doll brand has come under fire on social media after releasing an “all-inclusive” collection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Because despite their choice of dolls of different skin tones, it seems they forgot an Asian version of the doll’s creation.
Mattel, the company behind Barbie, has teamed up with the International Olympic Committee and Tokyo 2020 organizers for the new collection. The collection includes five dolls that reflect the Olympic program’s five new sports: baseball/softball, sports climbing, karate, skateboarding and surfing.
The dolls were promoted again last month when the Olympics were underway. But despite efforts to be “inclusive and innovative,” Mattel misses the mark. Because soon people noticed that there were no Asian Barbies in the group. Many users are now sharing their disappointment on Twitter and Instagram.
“I will no longer buy Barbie dolls for my two daughters,” said Mae Xiong, a Michigan Macomb County official. Many users also wondered how Mattel could forget about the Asian Barbie while hosting the games in Tokyo, an Asian city where many athletes of Asian descent also won medals at the games this year.
