Brazilian President Jair Bolsonara has criticized Leonardo DiCaprio after the actor called on young Brazilians to vote in elections later this year.

“The Amazon rainforest and other ecosystems in Brazil are essential to climate change,” DiCaprio wrote on Twitter Thursday. “What happens there matters to all of us. The voices of youth are important for changing the course toward a healthy planet.”

Incumbent President Bolsonaro – who has repealed several regulations on deforestation since his election in 2019 – was not mentioned by name, but responded sarcastically. “Thank you for your support, Leo! It is very important that every Brazilian vote in the upcoming elections. Our people will decide whether they want to preserve our sovereignty over the Amazon, or whether they want to be controlled by crooks who serve foreign interests.”
