US President Joe Biden made an unexpected visit to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, last week. Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed him. But a week later, conspiracy theories about Zelensky’s doppelganger surfaced with a video that was quickly shared on social media.
The photos show the two world leaders walking up a flight of stairs. US President Biden wore a tight suit and his Ukrainian colleague in eye-catching army fatigues. However, in the background we see the appearance of a man dressed as Zelensky.
The photos, recorded by the Polish tabloid “Fakt”, are being used on social media as “evidence” for the claim that Zelensky is working with doppelgängers. Several other photos of Zelensky and his “look-alike” have surfaced on the Internet to support this claim.
Personal guard
However, Shayan Sardarizadeh, a BBC journalist who covers misinformation and conspiracy theories, punches this theory out. According to him, the so-called “duo” will actually be the personal bodyguard of the Ukrainian president: Maksim Donets, who “doesn’t look like Zelensky at all,” according to the British journalist.
The Belarusian weekly ‘Nash Niva’ reported that Donets was a bodyguard for notorious oligarch Igor Kolomoisky before he went to protect Zelensky. As of February 2019, he is Zelensky’s bodyguard. When Zelensky was elected president, he became the head of his own security service.

Rumors have been circulating for some time that Russian President Vladimir Putin is dealing with look-alikes. The Ukrainian authorities, among others, have repeatedly noted that the Russian president does not always look the same. For example, last year the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence said his ears looked different during public appearances. The man claimed that he was convinced that Putin was seriously ill and therefore used his likeness. “They have different habits, different behaviors, different paths and sometimes different heights,” he added.
Putin had already responded to the rumors in the past, according to the British news agency ‘Reuters’. In February 2020, Russian state media claimed that TASS asked him if he was “real” and he answered in the affirmative. However, he admitted that he was offered the opportunity to work with doppelgängers for security reasons, but declined.
