Fishermen catch a giant stingray weighing more than 180 kilograms off the coast of the United States | the animals

Fishermen were able to recover a huge stingray from the waters off the coast of the US state of Connecticut. The animal was more than 1.8 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. Its weight is estimated at 180 kilograms.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced the news. A great catch was made last week by a Long Island Sound Trawl Survey crew.

“These gentle giants are found along the Atlantic coast from New England to Florida, but are relatively rare in Long Island Sound (Estuary of several rivers between Connecticut and Long Island, ed.“Like all stingrays, the spiny stingray has a poisonous spine in its tail. But don’t worry: it is not aggressive and does not enter shallow waters along the coast where people paddle and swim,” the ministry said.

The photo shows the ray lying on its back with its stomach up. “Instead of trying to flip the animal over, our crew quickly took some measurements and immediately shot the beam back into the water. They saw it swim away alive and well,” the ministry said.

The fact that the animal was found in Long Island Sound is likely a result of the climate change and warming ocean temperatures we are currently experiencing.

This is not the largest stingray ever found. For example, in 2015, a specimen measuring 4.3 meters long and 2.5 meters wide and weighing between 318 and 363 kilograms was found in Thailand. According to one expert, “it is clearly one of the largest freshwater fish in the world.”
