Government must invest in mental health providers – Suriname Herald

There is a lot to do in the mental health field for caregivers, because the nursing staff works hard every day. Angel Wallerly Compangsilla, director of EFS College COVAB, says that asking for help from nursing staff is now becoming louder in various departments and pipelines in hospitals. The workload and stress that nurses have to work under is unhealthy. Working more than twelve hours a day is not healthy for any employee.

Every day there are nurses who burn because of the long working hours, the manager knows. She believes the government should pay extra attention to mental health. “Where is the caregiver’s care?” Wallerlei-Kumbangsila asks. It has been more than a year since nurses were forced to provide services to the community under the pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Who will provide spiritual care?” She asks. It’s often been mentioned in press conferences on COVID-19 that nurses work hard.

“This is the reality,” says the COVAB Director, “hence the call for the government to enable the deployment of services to support this group.” Last year, EFS College COVAB delivered more than 600 percent of students to the health sector. Despite the influx of extra staff, there is a shortage of nurses in the field.

“We are now living in the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and it seems that we will not emerge from the third wave anytime soon,” says Wallerlei-Kumbangsila. This is why society is calling for vaccination. It claims that the more people vaccinated, the fewer people admitted.

“COVID-19 is here to stay, but we need to protect ourselves from this virus. Continue to adhere to the COVID-19 measures put in place by the government. Nurses also deserve a break to recover from all the hard work they have done for more than a year,” says the COVAB Director.
