‘Grease’ star Olivia Newton-John dies at 73

Australian singer and actress Olivia Newton-John has died at the age of 73. Her husband John Easterling announced this on her official Facebook page.

“For thirty years, Olivia has been a symbol of victory and hope as she shared her experience with breast cancer,” Easterling says. Newton-John passed away “peacefully on her Southern California ranch Monday morning, surrounded by family and friends.”

Newton-John is best known for the 1978 musical Grease, in which she played Sandy alongside John Travolta. The actress and singer has suffered from breast cancer for years. She was declared cured twice, but five years ago the disease returned and she developed metastases in the lower back.

Newton-John also had great success with “Xanadu”, the theme song for the 1980 movie of the same name, and “Physical” from 1981. She was born in Great Britain, but moved with her family to Australia when she was five years old. In the 1960s, Newton-John returned to the UK, and in 1974 she appeared with the country at the Eurovision Song Contest. Shortly thereafter I moved to the United States.
