iMac G4 with M1 chip: a great combination
An avid Apple fan has fitted an old iMac G4 with an M1 chip. He did this as a tribute to Steve Jobs. in a tweet lat colby leaves (Tweet embed) See the end result in a video. When you watch the video, you’ll likely discover (like all of his followers) that the old iMac G4 still delights the masses.
Inspiration for iMac G4 M1
Colby says he got a lot of inspiration from a Youtube video which shows how to use the iMac G4 as an additional screen. He also used a number of other blogs that deal with G4 in detail.
Colby himself says about the project: “I don’t know much about hardware and sometimes it was really difficult. But with a lot of perseverance I was able to do it. I am very proud of myself!”
On the MacRumors forum, he goes on to say that as a kid he always wanted an iMac G4. He tried to make his creation with Mac mini machines, but Intel chips did not cooperate. This was in part due to the dimensions and heat development. However, the M1 does get a lot less hot and when he found out, he wanted to give it a try again.
Apple M1 chip
Apple soldered all of the computer components to the M1 chip. For example, the graphics processor and the Neural Engine are on the chip. This is also known as a “System on a Chip” or SoC. You can also find a SoC in a file iPhone 12 . series (from A14 processor) by D iPhone 13 (with A15 chip).
The SoC has significantly improved the speed and graphics performance of Macs with the M1 chip over those with an Intel chip. So the chip makes Macs more powerful, so that programs and heavy tasks run more smoothly.
How about an iMac G4 again?
It’s been a long time since the iMac G4 went on sale. The All-In-One was introduced in 2002 and has been sometimes affectionately referred to as the “iLamp” due to its striking appearance. The device was equipped with a PowerPC G4 processor with a power of 700 or 800 MHz and an on-board GeForce 2 MX video card. There was a 40 GB, 60 GB, and 80 GB hard drive in the machine and it had a DVD or CD player in the base.
The iMac is undoubtedly one of the most popular and popular Apple products. The latest update is the 2021 iMac, which was revealed in April 2021. It’s good to see that even the old design is still alive with Apple fans.
