Ireland has the highest number of asthma cases in Europe, but a new air quality measure offers hope outside

Ireland currently has the highest number of asthma patients in Europe, but has now taken a promising step in caring for people with respiratory conditions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched a new online service that allows citizens to monitor the air quality in their area.

This forecast is available at www.airquality.ieIt has several purposes. First and foremost, it allows people to plan their outdoor activities so that they can reduce potential exposure to poor air quality. In addition, the EPA hopes this new service will increase public awareness of air pollution problems in local areas.

Overall, there has been a reduction in air pollution in Ireland. However, some urban centres, such as Letterkenny, Ennis and Enniscorthy, still regularly suffer from poor air quality. New air quality projections provide a valuable tool to address these issues.

How it works?

The forecast is updated twice daily, at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The site contains maps showing expected air quality for up to three days: today, tomorrow and the day after. Quality is rated on a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 indicates very poor air quality and 1 to 3 indicates good air quality.

In addition, the forecast provides information on daily concentrations of the three main air pollutants in Ireland: particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3). The new air quality forecast not only provides insight into the current situation but also helps in planning activities and taking necessary measures to reduce exposure to air pollution.
