Kidnapped Colombian sister Gloria Cecilia Narvaes released in Mali after 4.5 years

The 57-year-old sister, a member of the Franciscan Congregation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate, had already given a sign of life in March by writing a note to her brother through the Red Cross. Sister Narvaez wrote in capital letters “because she always did,” and her parents’ names are echoed in the text, perhaps to establish her identity.

Narváez was kidnapped on February 7, 2017 in Karangasso, southern Mali, where she had been working as a missionary for six years. Mali’s interim president, Colonel Asimi Gueta, conducted extensive negotiations for her release. He praised the sister for her courage and said that her release was “the culmination of the joint efforts of a number of intelligence agencies.” Meanwhile, Guetta greeted Narvaez in the audience (look at the picture).

No more information has been released. Not even if a ransom was paid. According to the first reports, the woman is in good health. Narvaez will now travel to Rome, Italy. More than 900 people have been kidnapped in Mali since 2017, according to ACLED (Armed Conflict Website and Event Data).
