Kiev: Ukraine fulfills all accession conditions imposed by the European Union | outside

With the appointment of a new director at the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), Ukraine has fulfilled all the conditions for starting accession negotiations with the European Union. Prime Minister Dennis Shmyhal announced this on Monday.

“Ukraine has now fulfilled the seven recommendations of the European Union (…) and this demonstrates our intention to start accession negotiations this year,” Shmyhal said in a statement.

European leaders had provided Ukraine with candidate membership in June 2022. This decision was linked to seven reforms. These include the appointment of a new director at NABU, along with a number of measures to strengthen the rule of law and a law against the excessive influence of oligarchs.

The next step in the accession process is the start of negotiations on transforming European legislation. It is a decision that must be taken unanimously by the Member States on the proposal of the European Commission. The accession negotiations themselves usually take many years.

The Ukrainian government has decided to appoint 40-year-old Semen Kryvonos as director of NABU. The anonymous lawyer ran a public agency for urban planning and architecture. Vitaly Shabunin, an influential anti-corruption campaigner, wrote on Facebook that Krivonos has “zero experience” with corruption investigations and his ties to the presidency.
