What are current insights into common health problems in people with intellectual disabilities? This was discussed during the main training course for the care of the disabled on July 5 at the Nieuwe Buitensociëteit in Zwolle. A new mini-documentary on dementia in Down syndrome was also shown.

The main training course for the care of the disabled was created from heart care In collaboration with Dr. Alan Decker (pictured), who is a lecturer-researcher at the University of Groningen / UMCG and Head of the Department Action-Oriented Research (PWO) of the Frisian Health Care Organization Alliade. At the conference, the latest ideas arising from various studies in practice were shared.

Health promotion can be better
During the morning plenary session, it became clear that the health of people with intellectual disabilities often leaves much to be desired. Many health issues are overlooked in people with intellectual disabilities, such as swallowing problems, dementia, and sleep apnea.

In addition, very little is done to promote health. For example, only 9% of people with intellectual disabilities meet exercise guidelines. And that 9% may also be an exaggeration, as sports scientist Marielle Trump wrote in her blog earlier.)

What this means for the health of people with intellectual disabilities was one of the themes of the conference. The results of the research are clear: people with intellectual disabilities may age, but they are also unhealthy. They die unnecessarily prematurely as a result of their undiagnosed diseases and unhealthy lifestyle. Their environment, the care organization in which they reside, their supervisors and relatives can play a more active role in this.

Down’s syndrome
The conference also focused on identifying dementia in people with Down syndrome, using a low-threshold tool for diagnosing sleep apnea, improving communication with people with Down syndrome, and examining feeding and swallowing problems in people with intellectual disabilities. .

Also shown was a new mini-documentary about dementia in people with Down syndrome, which was published and produced by students of the Honors Faculty of the University of Groningen. Each class of honors students who take the Down and Alzheimer’s elective course concludes with a small documentary film. All documentaries about dementia and Down syndrome can be found on YouTube that have been made so far. |

Hart voor Zorg () will soon have a file Webinars of this conference to watch. Read more about the search results in these articles click:
