The Xbox Series X inventory shortage appears to continue into 2021 as Microsoft revealed that next-generation console offerings will be limited to “at least until June”.
Mike Spencer, Microsoft’s chief investor relations, revealed the reassuring news in an interview with The New York TimesHe also added that the company had already sold its Xbox consoles in the last quarter.
Spencer’s comments coincide with Microsoft’s CFO Amy Hood, who has previously said that Xbox Series X stocks will be “limited” until at least March 31.
Sadly, the promise of readily available Xbox Series X stock has been hampered by a shortage of chips from AMD, which produces a Zen 2-based CPU and RDNA 2 GPU in the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su said the chip shortage will continue until mid-2021, and she expects “tightness” in terms of manufacturing capacity in the first half of 2021.
Finding affordable Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S consoles has been a challenge for consumers. Since pre-orders opened in September 2020, consoles have sold out quickly as retailers post new inventory.
The shortage of supply and soaring demand were not compensated for by speculators, robots, and even gangs that have targeted and profited from the buying frenzy surrounding the next generation of consoles.
The shutdown also added to buyer’s problems, as traditional stores were closed to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, which meant that consoles were only available to buy online.
