“More than 85 percent of doctors have an agreement” – Health

The vast majority of physicians across Belgium are bound by the recent tariff agreement that the Physicians’ Association and Health Insurance Funds concluded at the end of last year. According to figures from Riziv, 87.52% of doctors adhere to the agreement, according to the French-speaking trade magazine Le Spécialiste.

Proportionately, slightly more doctors adhere to the tariff agreement. In the previous so-called Medikomot agreement, the rate was 86.45 percent. In other words, doctors are contracted who adhere to the tariff agreement and follow the fixed rates. Others are unconventional: they can charge higher fees.

Doctors had until March 10 to partially or completely disengage. In Flanders, 13.78 percent is unconventional, which is in line with Brussels (13.76 pieces). In Wallonia the figure is lower. Less than one in ten doctors (9.73%) have opted out of the tariff agreement.

In some areas, unconventionality is much higher. For example, 49.08 percent of plastic surgeons are non-traditional, as are 57.3 percent of ophthalmologists and 64.44 percent of dermatologists.

A few days before Christmas, doctors and health insurance funds reached a 2022-2023 agreement. There was talk of a total amount of more than 9.9 billion euros for 2022. More than 9 billion euros are being saved for doctors’ fees, an increase of 2.4 percent compared to 2021.
