Netflix wants to give young filmmakers the opportunity to make a short documentary with their support. The broadcast channel has set up a documentary talent fund for this. Unfortunately, only UK filmmakers have a chance to be backed at the moment.
Ten junior filmmakers will receive between 22,000 and 44,000 Euros from Netflix to create a short documentary. The final product should be between 8 and 12 minutes long, and fit the specific theme – “Britain is not boring and here it is a story” – “Britain is not boring and here is a story.”
Final films will be shared on Netflix’s social media channels. Moreover, there is also talk of a possible future with the streaming service. “It doesn’t matter if you ever have a camera, we want to encourage anyone with a good story to look for it,” said Kate Townsend, head of Netflix Original Documentaries. The bravest, funnest, and most surprising stories, and we can’t wait to see what you have. ”
The fund is part of a new Netflix initiative – Netflix’s Hardship Fund – that aims to support film and television creators who have contracted the coronavirus. The Live Broadcasting Service donated approximately € 1.8 million to the FFF’s Emergency Relief Fund and the Dramatic Artists Fund.
The latter organization is led by director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, 1917). He recently criticized Netflix: It would be ironic if the streaming services – Netflix, Amazon Prime, and the like – would make millions during the shutdown of our best acting, production, writing and directing talents, while the art world that nurtured that talent is about to die. ”
