New ROG Ally portable game console to compete with Steam Deck | games

A new portable game console, the ROG Ally from Asus, will be released on May 11th. It is a Windows laptop that supports multiple gaming services.

ASUS now indicates that the device is powered by the powerful AMD Ryzen Z1 processor. It’s mainly competition on Valve’s Steam Deck, and not as fiercely on Nintendo’s less impressive Switch console. Since the device runs on Windows 11, it is not only fully compatible with Steam, but also with services like Xbox Game Pass, EA app, and Epic Games.

The 7-inch LCD touch screen has a resolution of 1080p and a refresh rate of 120Hz. Response time is barely 7ms, and with a brightness of 500 nits, you should also see enough in a sunny lawn. Thanks to a tool called “Adaptive Sync,” photos should always stay sharp. “Even during matches that are played at a high tempo, without rupture or choppy images due to low fps.”

ROG Ally weighs 608 grams and is equipped with ergonomic grips. The device has two thumb sticks, a D-pad, and various control buttons. Two fans should make the machine quieter under load than Valve’s Steam Deck.

You can connect the ROG Ally to an external display via a docking station, similar to Nintendo Switch. Different versions of the device will appear. Full specifications and suggested retail pricing will be revealed at the May 11th launch event.
