The sun appears often, leaves appear on trees and flowers everywhere: it’s springtime in Tilburg! With the advent of the beautiful first days of spring, many people seem to be getting happier. How did this happen? DPG Media Scientist Martin Peters explains.
The rising sun makes almost everyone happy. why? “More exposure to light ensures more vitamin D in our bodies,” Martin says. “A higher dose of vitamin D provides more serotonin, which is a substance that makes us feel happy.” Curious if we were expecting a lot of sunshine in Tilburg this month? In early spring we see a lot of “new” things while walking in Tilburg. For example, we see more and more green leaves on trees, birds flying around hyacinths and colorful flowers. Martin: “These new experiences ensure that we produce more dopamine – also called the happiness hormone – and feel happier.”
The days are longer
In the spring, the days last a little longer: we get a few extra minutes of light every day. “More daylight affects melatonin in our brains, making our sleep rhythms work better,” Martin says. When our sleep rhythm is good, we sleep better in general, feel more comfortable and feel happier.
